Review : SSUEIM&CCLIM Write In Cursive Script Book

Last year, I reviewed a Korean Calligraphy practice book from SSUEIM&CCLIM and today I will be reviewing the Write in Cursive Script version.

The biggest difference between those two books is that this book is practicing the english alphabet [whilst the other was Korean characters] However, like the other book, all instructions are given in Korean. But its pretty self explanatory so you need not worry even if you cannot read Korean.

[As with the other book]
The author suggests using anything you are comfortable with, such as ball pen, brush pen and even pencil. Thankfully, the paper is very thick so there is no need to worry about ink going through it or ghosting on the other side.

The pictures accompanying all the text you have to practice writing, is as lovely as ever!

After finishing the first book, I was extremely excited to find this other version! Now I'm keeping a lookout to see if I can find anymore whilst I continue practicing!
What about you?
Would you try these out?

Review: SSUEIM&CCLIM Calligraphy Book (3000 쓸수록 끌리는 캘리그라피)

Here at TN5C we love buying interesting stationery as a souvenir whilst on holiday.
One of the many items we purchased is a book on learning calligraphy.

But with a twist! We are learning to write Korean characters calligraphy.
Size : 205 x 200mm

The author suggests using anything you are comfortable with, such as ball pen, brush pen and even pencil. Thankfully, the paper is very thick so there is no need to worry about ink going through it or ghosting on the other side.

After practising smaller sets of words, you can also try write longer phrases. A good way to learn word arrangement.

I find it hard to find lessons or tips on writing non english calligraphy at times so it was thrilling to find this book and I've been trying to practise as much as I can.
All in all, a very good buy.
Do you buy things like this when you go on holiday?

In other exciting news, we have revamped our Etsy store and added a whole bunch of new stickers. Do check them out because for the first time ever, the printable versions are also for sale! Simply Lettering Magazine, Issue 1

One of the things I like to do when I travel is go to a supermarket and at the supermarket, I like to browse the magazine racks.

There always a wide array of magazines such as tabloids, tech, women's, food but I'm usually looking for a craft magazine.

On a trip to London last year, I picked up Simply Lettering issue 1 at a Sainbury's.

If you're like me, you're probably thinking the pens are the biggest draw of this magazine.

Also included are some practice templates and a magazine.

The magazine included pages of supplies, things one might need to take up Modern Calligraphy as a hobby.

Besides an introduction the basics, there were also articles with techniques one might use after becoming more confident in their skills, as well as interviews with calligraphers and hand letterers.

The template book included a number of different styles of calligraphy and flourishes.

However, I was most interested in the Brush Lettering starter set.
It came with 2 pens, 1 black and 1 grey and they were double ended, brush tip and fine tip.

I ended up comparing it to the tombow, as it has the same brush and fine tip ends and the tombow is my favourite brush pen.
With the starter set pen, the ink is not as pigmented and the pen is not as smooth as the tombow.
I also found that after a few uses, the tip of the starter set pen did not stay as sharp as I would've liked.

Despite its shortcomings, I think that for practice and first timers, it is adequate.
Just be prepared to upgrade later on.

Looking at their website, it seems they're up to issue 6!
Have you purchased this magazine? How do you like it?

Review: Monami Color Twin Brush

Monami is a Korean stationery company, they make pens, artist supplies and office supplies.
I've reviewed their live color DIY pens previously and loved them so when I saw these brush pens, I had to pick them up, it certainly helped that they were on sale too.

There are 3 sets to choose from, each with an array of beautiful colours.

First, each pen has brushes on both ends, which is different from most brush pens, which has a brush on one end and a fine tip marker on the other.
The end with the pen's colour indicated has the bigger brush and the other end is a smaller brush.

Initial impressions are that the brushes are quite pliable, even more so than the Tombow brush pen.
The colours are very pigmented, bright and they flow easily.

The 'Sea' set has 4 blue, 1 blue green and 1 grey.

The 'Flower' set has 1 yellow, 1 orange, 1 beige, 2 pinks and 1 red.

The 'Forest' set has 3 greens,  1 teal, 1 brown and 1 black.

I found the brushes to be too soft for my liking but that's a personal choice.
These pens would be great for colouring and projects that require pigmented pens.

Overall, a great set to pick up if you see it and need some more colours to use, not totally unique but still great!

Review: Staedtler Double Ended Lettering Pens

We sure do love our pens, especially when they go on sale!

I picked up this set last year and they've sat unused so I decided to put them to the test.

This set is 12 colours and they are double ended.
One end is a brush pen, the other is a simple felt tip.

True to Staedtler's reputation, the pens are great for beginners and easy to use.
The brush is pliable but firm enough for people starting out with a brush pen and the colours are rich and pigmented.
I especially like the Magenta colour, isn't it striking.

The felt tips are basic but usable and complement the brush tips well.

If I had one criticism, it would be that the construction of the pen is not the best. The plastic is slightly frayed in places and there appears to be glue residue in some places.

Overall, it is a great first set for someone wanted a brush lettering pen but not wanting to invest in say the Tombow brush pens.
If you see this on sale, snap it up!
