Review: MUJI Sticky Pocket Post Card Size

How do you store all your paraphernalia for your diary?

I'm talking about tickets from travel or even just receipts in day to day life which you might want to document in your diary as well. A few brands including MIDORI has released an extra pocket which you can stick in your diary but its often too small.

Recently I came across this in MUJI and I think its perfect!

Size: Post card Size [14.8 x 10cm]

Its made of vinyl so its waterproof and can protect your items.

There is a lot of storage, ranging from postcard size to namecard pockets [x2]

And it comes with a sticky back and is ready for sticking into your diary or folder!
The possibilities are endless.

What do you think? Is this something you would use?

Decorating Muji Paper Clips

Muji makes great basics, from furniture, to food, to stationery, everything can be customised to your own style and taste.

The stationery range has a lot of good things to customise, like these paper clips.

Each pack of paper clips comes in a pack of 5 and each clip can hold up to 5 sheets of paper.
The clips are made of paper, which is important for our purposes.

1. Pen/Marker

This is the most basic and easiest way to customise, the downside is there is a little bit of bleed on the paper material of the paper clip but it's not terrible.
Use a sign/brush pen for a bit of flourish.

2. Sticker Labels

To be able to reuse the clip, use labels to customise your paper clip.

3. Printed labels

If you don't like looking at your own handwriting, like me, print the labels or use sticker paper.

4. Washi Tape

A combination of the above methods and a good way to use up washi tape.
If you collect washi tape, you know what I mean!

5. Cute stickers

I found these cute stickers in Daiso and it's such a simple and cute way to add to the paperclip.

Here's what it looks like in my notebook!

What do you think? What is your favourite way to customise the paper clip?

Review: MUJI Sign Pens + MUJI Highlighters (New colors)

I was in MUJI recently and could not resist picking up the new highlighter colors alongside the new Sign pens they had.

I did a review of the highlighters previously and these are the 3 new colors; Greyish Cyan, Olive Green and Lilac.

As you can see, the colors are quite pigmented compared the ever favorite MILDLINER.

Whilst I personally really like these unique shades, I do wonder if they are a little too dark to be used as actual highlighters.

And for those curious, here is the entire lineup of these highlighters from MUJI.

Now let's talk about the new sign pens!

I picked them in these two shades : black + greyish cyan (Yes I really like this color)

Here they are alongside most popular sign pens aka PENTEL sign pens.

And here's how they compare when used. As you can see the PENTEL sign pen is more like a brush and the tip is more flexible whilst the MUJI sign pen has a more rigid and thinner tip.

I really like writing with the MUJI sign pens and I think they have more unique colors [such as this greyish cyan]. I'll definitely be getting the whole collection next time!

Update: I've since purchase the entire collection, here they are + the swatches

DAISO Grid loose leaf pad VS MUJI Notebook type Loose Leaf

Recently I've noticed a new addition to the ever growing stationery collection over at DAISO.

Noticing how similar they are to something from MUJI, I decided to pick it up to do a comparison! Here they are side by side :

For comparison's sake, I've purchased them both in A5 size / 5mm Grid / 20 holes.

At first glance, both seem similar enough with the biggest exception that whilst you can place the entire book from MUJI into a file, you will need to remove the cover before you can do the same with the one from DAISO. (The cover does not have holes)

And on the inside (Daiso in front, MUJI in the back)

You can see that the DAISO version is more white with less obvious lines whilst the MUJI version features its standard cream paper with darker lines. Both grids are the same size at 5mm. The paper from both are equally smooth but the MUJI paper is thicker. Recommended if you are worried about the ink going through.

Another difference is the amount of paper you get. MUJI one is 50 pages and DAISO is 30 pages. However DAISO is 100yen + tax (USD$1~) and the MUJI version is 250yen + tax (USD$2.50~)
Note: Prices quoted are RRP in Japan.

The MUJI version also feels like a better product whereas the DAISO version seems a bit filmsy due to the thin cardboard used on the book's back cover. However this is hardly an issue if you are putting it in a file to start with.

The MUJI version is definitely better overall but at the same time, its also 2.5 times more expensive than DAISO. However, I'm unable to say with conviction, which is the one to buy. I think its up to the buyer to decide if the small differences are worth the prices and that should also ultimately determine their choice.

Have you tried either of these notebooks? What did you think of them?

Review : MUJI Highlighters

Ever popular Japanese brand MUJI has launched some new highlighters! There are 3 colors in all [as shown below]
Each highlighter is just 50yen + tax [0.50usd~]
Note: This is the price in Japan and may vary in other countries.

The design is typical of MUJI where simplicity is most desired and features clear plastic cases.

Here's how they match up against the MILDLINER pens.
As you can see, the ink colors are very close. However unlike the mildliners, they are not double ended and only have the typical highlighter nib. So if you do not use the pen end of the MILDLINERS, you can consider buying these since they are less than half the price.

Overall, I love these new highlighters. They look good, work well and the price is undefeatable!
I highly recommend them to you!

Top 5 items from MUJI for Journal enthusiasts

1. Sticky notes

Aside from the usual post-it like sticky notes, Muji makes some with interesting layouts. Like to-do lists or weekly schedules.

2. Pens, markers, highlighters, pencils, you name it

Whatever you need for writing things down. The gel pens are a particular favorite of mine.

3. Notebooks

MUJI makes a huge assortment of notebooks and comes in both spiral bound and perfect binding [glue bound]. They are also available in blank, lined and grid alongside two types of paper [the premium is only available for some sizes]. The Passport size is a perfect match for the TN passport size.

4. Masking Tape

Dislike the usual cartoony style masking tapes or prefer something a little more simple so as not to deter from your journaling? Muji has you covered.

5. Diaries

I cant possibly talk about things for planners and not mention their diaries. The schedule note is not dated and can be used anytime of the year!

Have you bought any of these? Or are there other things you prefer to buy for your journaling from MUJI? Share them with us in the comments!

MUJI Masking Tape Case

There has been a bit of buzz about the MUJI Saran Wrap Container lately. Not for its amazing ability to hold a roll of Saran Wrap [or aluminium foil] but something a lot more closer to my heart.

MASKING TAPE!

The case is beautiful in its simplicity yet sturdy enough to stack or carry on the go.

There is even a built in sharp edge [originally for the saran wrap] which you can use to tear your masking tape with.

It comes in two sizes. I purchased the smaller one which is pictured above.

Cost: About 400yen + tax in Japan.

Also good for small rolls of wrapping paper! And...I suppose saran wrap...

Word to the wise: Not all masking tapes will fit in it but I am sure you will find some that will.

Or you could just buy more....#justsaying
